2016 Chinese Culture Trip to Chicago Chinatown

A Chinese culture trip to Chicago Chinatown was held by WMU Confucius Institute on June 11th, 2016. Students and families, 38 people in total, from the Chinese Immersion Program in Meadow Brook, Grand Rapids, and the Chinese Teaching School in Kalamazoo paid a visit to Chicago Chinatown. They were excited about having a deep and extensive contact with the Chinese culture.

CI holds Chinese New Year Game Party at WMU

On Wednesday, February 3, The Confucius Institute at Western Michigan University held a Chinese New Year Game Party at Wesley Foundation. Over 150 people came and enjoyed the games and the food.

The Game Party is an annual celebration of the Chinese New Year by CI at WMU. In China, people go to fairs during the Chinese New Year. In a traditional Chinese fair, there are performances and booths demonstrating and selling traditional arts and crafts. You can also find a lot of games to play and taste numerous kinds of local snacks. CI at WMU brought the fair to Kalamazoo.

Chicago consul officials visit the Confucius Institute at WMU

On May 7, Counselor Qin Juhua, director of the education office at the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Chicago, and two other officials visited the Confucius Institute at Western Michigan University for meetings and to host training sessions. 

On May 8, the delegation met with the WMU provost, Dr. Timothy Greene. They exchanged opinions on various topics and discussed the possibilities for cooperation.

Teachers of Confucius Institute at Western Michigan University traveled to north Michigan on May 4th and spent three days for cultural classes in Inland Lake Elementary as well as team building activities in Mackinaw City/Island.

Chinese New Year Celebration

The Confucius Institute at WMU hosted the 2015 Chinese New Year Gala on Feb. 11 at Wesley Foundation. Provost Timothy Greene and Dr. Molly Lynde-Recchia, chair of World Languages and Literatures were some of the attendees. Dr. Wolfgang Schlöer, associate provost and director of Confucius Institute at WMU gave the opening remarks for the gala followed by the traditional Lion dance opening. Participants enjoyed 13 performances about China and participated in three rounds of Chinese games.

Chinese New Year is around the Corner

On January 23rd, teachers from Confucius Institute at Western Michigan University visited Northward Elementary School in Allegan and had three 50-min presentations about Chinese New Year for second, third and fourth graders.
